Leeds University Project chooses DLM

15 Jan 2008 - 15 Jul 2008

Leeds University Synthesis and Application of Nanostructured Tethered Silicates Project (SANTS), a new EU project funded under the Nanotechnology Theme of Framework 6, recently launched its new online collaboration resource, which has been created by digital logistics agency eleventeenth.

The SANTS Project (http://www.sants-nanosilicates.com/) will observe diatoms, small unicellular algae that possess internal silica skeletons that are laid down due to the silica precipitating activity of specialised proteins called silaffins. It will investigate the parameters that influence the ability of biosilicating peptides and peptide mimics to entrap enzymes, the tethering of nanostructured biosilica layers and nanoparticles, and the use of these tethered silicates for improved biosensors and biocatalysis involving single enzymes and multi-enzyme cascades.

“The SANTS Project offers significant environmental benefits, cost and time savings to the manufacturing, biochemical and electrochemical industries,” commented Dr Paul Millner, Head of the Biosensors & Biocatalysis Group in the Research Institute of Membrane and Systems Biology, Faculty of Biology, University of Leeds. “Through the resource that eleventeenth has developed, we have both a means of enabling partners around the world to communicate and collaborate, as well as disseminating research findings to interested parties.”

The SANTS team tasked eleventeenth with creating an online resource for the partners of the project to be able to upload, share and distribute documents such as white papers, discussion papers and monthly, quarterly and annual reports both internally and externally with project affiliates and to the European Commission.

“Having previously worked with Dr Millner and his team, we are extremely pleased to be able to once again to be able to provide them with proven digital tools that will aid their world class research,” added Phil Atkinson, Director of New Business Development at eleventeenth.
